  • Basic Travel Tips
  • First of all don't travel tired. If you arrive at the airport exhausted this may last your entire trip. An early night at home or an airport hotel (if you live out of town)the night before a flight can make the vacation.
  • On board try to sit in an exit row or front row. This will provide more leg room. These are hard to get. You must be one of the first checking in. Children are generally not checked into these seats. You must be strong enough to open an emergency exit.
  • If on your way to a resort some lighter clothing in your carry on can make things comfortable departing your plane.
  • If you have a big time-zone change at destination if possible resist sleeping until it is bed time at destination. This will acclimatize you sooner.
  • Remember proper ID, passport( if you don't have one get one ), or birth certificate and picture ID. A photocopy of your ID can help if you loose yours
  • Check our globe and the World Wide Travel Guide (W.W.T.G.) for destination information. You will find entry requirements, weather, currency, languages spoken and a lot of other things you might need to know.
  • When on a cruise or in a resort food is generally safe. Bottled water is best everywhere if available.
  • Any food served hot is safer than something cold which could have been washed with unsafe water.
  • A can of pop or juice is better than a glass of something with an ice cube from an unknown water source. Travellers should also be careful of shellfish cooked or not. Be safe.
  • Many everyday items can be hard to find at some destinations. Some items can also be much more expensive than home. Your favorite medicines, sunscreens, bug repellant, etc.
  • American dollars are accepted almost anywhere but Cuba. Some small bills are helpful for tips, taxis, and so on. Any combination of credit card, debit card, cash and travellers cheques should work.
  • Cuba is possibly the only destination you can't use a debit card. You can receive a cash advance on your visa or master card at some banks in Cuba. You can't use american express or american express traveller's checks in Cuba. Check the W.W.T.G. for more information on ATM locations around the world.
  • Regarding your luggage: It is unlikely your bags will not make it.
  • To be prepared pack toiletries and a change of clothes in your carry on. When off the resort on a tour or just on your own bring toiletries these may not be available at an emergency pit stop.
  • If you need new luggage buy something unique. This can save you checking every third bag at the baggage claim.
  • Don't over pack! Charters only allow 20 kilos for baggage plus 7 kilos for your carry on. Most people over pack. Do you need to bring that winter parka to Mexico? We all forget something small but most people pack too much. Including myself! Pack as little as you can. Remember it will be fuller on the way home.
  • Cruising is a different game with the formal and semi formal nights. You arrive however by scheduled air or a cruise lines charter with a higher baggage allowance.
  • Health Insurance: If you have your own CHECK IT OUT! Bring the phone numbers you need in case of an emergency and know what to do! Many policies want you to pay upfront and don't go as far as you may need. We sell RBC Insurance and believe this to be the best available. An air ambulance home, an injury before departure, traffic accident on the way to the airport, a death in the family. There are too many things that can happen. It's something we don't want to think about but they happen. The worst travel horror stories are from uninsured travellers.
  • Safety: When off the resort or cruise ship be careful. Avoid displaying valuables or leave them in a safe place. I try to bring only what I think I may want to spend. When paying I try to pull out of my pocket the exact amount making it look like I have no more money. Great for bargaining! (if you use this technique do not pull out extra cash if you really want something as it will hurt my barganing if I meet the same vendor in my travels) Many travel or luggage stores sell money belts and other money hiders. Avoid large crowds of locals. A disturbance may be a ploy to distract you. Watch out! I am not trying to alarm you. I have never been robbed. Thieves are looking for an easy target. Don't be a target!
  • I wrote these basic tips to encourage travellers to think before packing your bags and keep a heads up when off the ship or resort.
