You are here

Planning your first European adventure is exciting but it can also feel overwhelming. From navigating entry requirements and currency exchanges to organizing transportation and insurance, there’s a lot to consider before setting off to explore this diverse and enchanting continent.

To make your journey smoother, here’s a comprehensive checklist to ensure you’re fully prepared:

1. Visas & Passports

Traveling to Europe as a Canadian has long been simple, but things are changing. Starting in mid-2025, Canadians will need to apply for an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) to visit 30 European countries. The process is straightforward: it requires a small fee, takes only a few minutes to complete online, and is valid for three years (or until your passport expires – whichever comes first).

If you plan to visit or transit through the U.K., you’ll need to apply for an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation). This £10 requirement is easy to obtain and ensures hassle-free entry.

Finally, don’t forget to check your passport’s validity! Many European countries require that your passport be valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date. Double-check this before you book.

2. Currency & Currency Exchange

Cash is handy to have when exploring Europe, even in today’s digital world. While the euro (€) is widely used, remember that not every country in Europe adopts it. For example, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, and Hungary have their own currencies. Additionally, the U.K. uses the British Pound (£).

To avoid last-minute hassles, consider ordering foreign currency through your bank before your trip. For widely used currencies like the euro, your local branch may have some available, but it’s safer to order in advance. This way, you’ll have the cash you need when you arrive.

3. Travel Insurance

Nobody wants to think about delays, lost luggage, or medical emergencies—but having the right travel insurance can save you a lot of stress (and money) if the unexpected happens. Insurance policies vary, so it’s wise to speak with a Fareconnect agent to find coverage that suits your needs. From trip cancellations to comprehensive medical coverage, we’ve got you covered.

4. Tech Tips

Europe’s vast diversity makes it one of the most exciting continents to explore, but getting around can seem daunting. Thankfully, technology makes it easier than ever.
