Google Translate - Allows you to translate languages. Not only can you type in what you’re trying to translate, you can also take a picture of a sign, menu, and more.
WhatsApp - A convenient messaging service for travelers abroad and at home. WhatsApp uses an internet connection and your cell phone number for your account. With this app, you’re able to call, video chat, send messages, images, voice memos, gifs, and files.
Food, entertainment & local tips
Foursquare City Guide - This app finds where you are and recommends restaurants, cafes, and nightlife based on your preferences.
Lonely Planet - Travel guidebooks to explore your destination. Available for purchase.
Meetup - Interact with locals and other travelers who have mutual interests or shared hobbies.
Rick Steves Audio Europe - Audio guides for popular cities, regions, or sites for European travel, including walking tours.
Roadtrippers - Find interesting places to stop during a road trip throughout US and Canada. When you find a site you like, just add it to your trip, and Roadtrippers draws your route.
TheFork - For making restaurant reservations in Europe. This app allows you to browse different restaurants by category and make reservations.
Viator - Specializes in helping you book tours worldwide. You'll find tours that vary from daily excursions to weeklong adventures.
Zomato - Crowd-sourced review site for restaurants.
Getting around
Google Maps - Provides you with directions and estimated time for travel mode options. You can save the location of your accommodation, etc. It is very accurate when it comes to public transportation schedules.
OBI - For taxis and rideshares - shows all cars/drivers in real-time.
TripWhistle - Maps your location and allows you to easily text or send your GPS coordinates or location. It also provides emergency numbers for firefighters, medical personnel and police in nearly 200 countries. Available for iOS only.
Uber / Lyft - Ride-hailing apps that operate around the world. Your account eliminates the need to carry local currency or speak the same language.
Remembering your trip
Trotter It - A digital travel journal to document and share your travels with photos and videos. Transform your data into recap videos. There’s an option to connect with other travelers and be inspired by their experiences.
Polarsteps - Track and relive your trip through this app while also following along with other fellow travelers.
From staying connected to picking a restaurant to keeping a digital diary, there’s an app for every aspect of your vacation. While you most likely won’t need every one of these options, it’s still helpful to keep them in mind!
