So, you’ve booked your trip (congrats!) and now the fun part begins. Dreaming of escaping your reality, maybe soaking up some sunshine, or taking on a new fun activity. Whatever your vacation looks like, it’s safe to say you’ll have a good time.

However, pesky doubts can sometimes creep in, making you second-guess yourself. Here are a few common ones:

  • Have I packed enough?
  • Will my flights be on time?
  • Will the weather be good?

We’ve all been guilty of overthinking, and these might just scratch the surface of things to consider. While it’s nearly impossible to plan for every hiccup, we’ll walk you through the most common mistakes we see clients make—and help them avoid! If you recognize yourself in any of these, don’t worry, you’re in good company.

1. Packing your entire closet

We get it, you want to have a different outfit for each occasion, weather, and activity. However, this not only leads to a pricey, overweight suitcase but also analysis paralysis when deciding what to wear. And if we’re being honest, you’ll probably only wear your favorite three shirts anyway.

Our Tip: Pick the essentials! Select clothing that is versatile and can be used on multiple occasions. Also, compression bags allow you to pack more while saving space. You can thank us later.

2. Saying “no thank you” to travel insurance

To many, travel insurance is an afterthought. While it’s nice to think nothing will go wrong on your trip and you won’t have to use it, unfortunately, this isn’t always the case.

Our Tip: Chat with your Fareconnect agent! They know the ins and outs of travel insurance and can provide valuable insight as to whether this can benefit you if something were to go wrong. We partner with major insurance issuers, such as Manulife.

3. Exchanging cash at the airport

Convenient, yes. Pricey, typically yes. When arriving at a new destination, exchanging money from a currency exchange counter at the airport is not ideal.

Our Tip: If possible, try to get your foreign currency before leaving. Many banks today allow you to order currency over their app and be able to pick it up within a few days.

4. Not learning about local customs

Every country has its unique customs. Whether it’s tipping etiquette, common phrases, hand gestures, or dress codes. Sometimes not being aware of these traditions can lead to awkward or uncomfortable situations.

Our Tip: A quick Google search can go a long way! By learning the basics, even if you make a mistake, locals will appreciate your efforts to embrace their culture.
